The energy requirement for the production of paper is considerable. It is being generated in our own gas-driven combined heat and power (CHP) plant that was taken into service in 1983 and led to a reduction of 25% in the total energy usage.
The CHP station consists of 4 generators each of 3,5 MW and easily produces 100 million kWh per year. The hot exhaust gases released by the gas turbines are used in the production of steam for drying the paper. The Energy Covenant signed by the industry and the government will lead to a further reduction in our energy consumption.
Meanwhile Smurfit Kappa Roermond Papier has reached world class standard with regard to the international energy bench mark.
